About Me

Andy Payton is a contemporary painter based in Ventura County, California. His work blends modern impressionism with abstraction, capturing the atmosphere and emotional resonance of the West Coast landscape.

Drawing inspiration from local surf breaks, coastal horizons, and mountain ranges, Payton’s paintings reflect a deep connection to place. As an avid surfer and sailor, he translates the movement of water and changing light into layered compositions that feel both immersive and expressive. His mountain scenes are informed by time spent hiking throughout California, including his completion of the 210-mile John Muir Trail.

Working primarily in acrylic, Payton builds his surfaces through intuitive mark-making and tonal variation, creating pieces that balance structure with fluidity. His work is less about exact representation and more about evoking the feeling of a moment—wind over water, light on a ridge, or the quiet stillness of open space.

Biography

Andy Payton’s creative foundation began early in life, learning to draw from his mother. As a child, he expanded these skills into building elaborate movie sets and producing full-length home films—an early expression of his interest in visual storytelling and composition.

He graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and went on to become a teacher, later relocating to Virginia. It was there—after experiencing an unexpected stretch of snow days—that Payton returned to painting, reconnecting with art in a way that would shape his ongoing practice.

Today, he balances his artistic work with running a retail coffee business. Painting has become a vital part of his daily rhythm—an opportunity to slow down, reflect, and create after the demands of the day.
